Although we don't know exactly what water tail is, there are clear causes of the problem - and concrete tips for you to prevent it. Dogs that enjoy the water and spend a lot of time in it are more likely to be affected, so it's especially common during the summer months. Water tail appears when the dog's backside gets wet and cold. To make the right diagnosis, it's important to think about what the dog was doing just before the symptoms appeared. Was the dog swimming or out in the cold rain?

How do I recognise water tail?

Water tail is clearly visible when the dog's tail hangs straight down and is paralysed. The dog is often in a lot of pain and is protective of its hindquarters. Some individuals find it difficult to defecate and are reluctant to sit down. Many also become moody and eat poorly. However, it's important to remember that these symptoms can sometimes be due to a lumbar injury or neurological causes. Consult a veterinarian if you are unsure.

What can I do to help?

The best thing you can do to avoid water tail is to keep your dog warm and dry. If you bathe your dog often, dry it thoroughly around the tail root afterwards and use a dog coat to provide some extra warmth after the bath. However, water tail can also appear after cold and rainy walks. Stock up your wardrobe with dog coats that are suitable for all situations! We have several varieties that can help prevent and relieve water tail. The mesh dog coat is suitable when the temperature is a little higher. A fleece dog coat is a good choice when it's a little chilly. Use a raincoat on rainy days, preferably with a filling if it is also cold.

All of these variants are excellent for preventing and relieving water tail, as they cover a large part of the tail root and protect exactly where it is needed. All these coats also contain our textile technologies, that reflect your dog's body heat as far infrared energy (FIR). The effect of FIR is known to stimulate blood flow and may help to keep your dog’s muscles warm and supple.

Water tail often goes away on its own within a few days to a week. If your dog his affected, it is important let it rest and to keep it warm and dry. If your dog is in a lot of pain, it may be a good idea to contact a vet so that it can be given painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication. If the water tail doesn't go away, you should contact your vet to see if the symptoms are due to something else.
