Collar or harness for your dog?
At Back on Track, we have both collars and harnesses - designed for comfort, safety, practicality and maximum freedom of movement for your dog. Our collars and harnesses have many uses and a well thought-out design. They are well-fitting, easy to use, lined with Welltex® and fitted with reflectors to make your dog visible in the dark.
In this article, we'll explain the difference between harnesses and collars to help you find the model that best suits your dog.
Dog collars
What makes a good collar? On the one hand, it should fulfil its purpose by providing the owner with safe and secure handling of the dog - on the other hand, it should be comfortable for the dog to wear. Of course, it should not cause discomfort during everyday, casual use. When buying a good dog collar, both of these criteria should be kept in mind, and neither should be met at the expense of the other.
Our latest model of dog collar, "Charlie", is available in four different colours: black, blue, green and brown. It's a semi-rigid model, which means it can expand to a fixed maximum circumference - and contract to a fixed minimum circumference. When the dog pulls on the leash, the force is distributed evenly around the neck, instead of being concentrated in a pressure towards the front of the neck.
In its most expanded state, it should be able to be pulled quickly and easily over the dog's head. In its most contracted state, it should tighten enough around the neck that the dog cannot crawl out of it.
‘Both dimensions are important,’ emphasises Karin Olebjörk, product developer at Back on Track. Karin has now measured countless dogs of all sizes and breeds, and always has the tape measure at hand. The size chart for "Charlie" shows both the minimum and maximum circumference of the collar. "Charlie" is a lightly padded collar, which prevents chafing and makes it comfortable to wear. It is also lined with Welltex®, our textile technology, which promotes blood flow to the muscles and can relieve stiffness and tension.
The "Charlie" dog collar is suitable for most occasions and can be used "all the time" - attach a leash and you're ready to go for a walk!
Dog harness
If your dog has problems with stiffness and pain in the neck, this can be aggravated by pulling or tugging on the leash. A dog collar can then be replaced with an ergonomically designed dog harness, which distributes the pressure differently and directs it away from the neck. For the harness design to be truly gentle on the dog, a great deal of knowledge about the dog's anatomy and musculoskeletal system is required. This is a subject area that Karin Olebjörk has fully mastered. She has decades of experience with dogs, especially working dogs and hunting dogs, which often use harness and line.
The purpose of a harness is to provide secure control of the dog while ensuring a fit that maximises freedom of movement. The straps of our dog harnesses are positioned to leave the shoulder blades free. They encircle the dog's chest with good margin behind the front legs, so they don't restrict the dog's movements or rub against its elbows. The straps then meet over the sternum, avoiding pressure on the major muscle groups.
The Max and Sally harnesses are lined with Welltex®, which can have a beneficial effect on the joints, vertebrae and neighbouring muscles. The difference between Max and Sally lies in the width of the back plate - with Max being the most opaque, with the largest back plate. The rings that hold the harness straps together are strong, non-opening and stainless steel to avoid discolouring the coat. The reflective details increase the dog's visibility in the dark, providing extra security and safety to both dog and owner.
The dog harnesses are very easy to put on and take off. They pull over the head and close with a buckle on either side, without the need to lift or manipulate the dog's front legs. This is practical and makes life easier for the dog owner - but the design is also intended to make life easier for the dog if it is stiff or has painful joints.
‘Max’ and ‘Sally’ are perfect for walking and are ideal for tracking. The leash or lead is attached to the back. They can also be used as an anti-pull harness if the leash is instead attached to the ring at the sternum. This deflects the force of the dog's pull.
Both models are available in four different colours: black, blue, green and brown.
